Linux Media Center Edition

How to Install Linux Media Center Edition step by step. | 14 bits

This long video shows how to setup Linux MCE..  This is really coming together.  There’s some rough edges in the appearance. But this is way scalable.  This might be the fate of the lappy some time soon, given its small size and TV out capability…

Best Wikipedia Page Ever!

I can’t believe I haven’t stumbled upon this wikipedia article before .

I’d do it for half that.

BBC NEWS | Entertainment | Digital switchover is ‘a mystery’

It states that dispite a £200Million campaign people don’t understand that the tick means you can watch digitial TV and it will work when the terestial signal is switched off..

Listen UK government.  It’s not difficult.  For £100Million pounds I’ll visit every home in the land and explain it to them, and then retire to my private island..

Monty Don has stroke

BBC NEWS | Entertainment | TV gardener Monty Don has stroke

This saddens me.  He’s been missed on Gardener’s world the past few weeks.  Now we learn that he’d had a stroke and will no longer be presenting at all.

I will miss monty, I trust his gardening presence greatly..   No word on who will take over.  Perhaps they’ll keep the current format of having different presenters tending their own part within the show..

Sign This, Stop Phorm

http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/ispphorm/

This is a government petition to stop phorm in it’s tracks.  If you don’t know what phorm is, it’s your ISP allowing an advertising company (phorm) to scan ALL the web activity you make from your home computer and then target you with adverts based on what you look at on the web.  Imagine that instead of just getting junk mail in the post they also read all mail you both recieve and send to/from any person on earth and then they target you futher with junk mail based on what they read in your private mail.  THAT’S PHORM.

  • Virgin Media
  • BT
  • Carphone Warehouse (talk talk)

are all looking into doing this and there’s more to follow.  This is actually likely to break the law in terms of intercept (you must have the permission in law to intercept email from both parties, i.e. you AND any website you visit).

Some good examples of where this can lead to issues even if you’re not that bothered about privacy were on lug radio this week:

  1. You’re looking to buy a nice anniversary present for your wife and google lots of nice things like diamond rings or carribean holidays.  Your wife then visits some websites and gets loads of really spefic ads to things you’re considering which blow the suprise.  A small issue, but will be quite important to people if it happens.
  2. You’re communicating online about a deeply personal issue, say a medial problem, through a forum or maybe even webmail.  Then you’re now bombarded with adverts about your very personal problem, not very sensative.  OK, so if you’ve got errectile disfunction then there’s already tonnes of viagra ads, but still..

This is very very bad, my data is mine.  Get off it Virgin..

Wii Fit

A week ago I bought wii fit.  I thought I’d write a few of my thoughts about it.  There’s been many reviews and they certainly cover the spectrum of opinion from “rubbish” to “fantastic”.

I am not the sort of person who thinks that Wii Fit will make me thin or healthy, the only Wii game that could lose weight for me would be Wii Lyposuction.  The creator of Wii Fit said himself that he didn’t believe that Wii Fit would make anyone fit.

What it is doing for me is motivating me to get healthier, lose weight and get more exercise.  When I first registered with Wii Fit my Wii Mii become rather fat and I dicovered that I was obese, not just overweight (as I thought).  Since then I have been using Wii Fit regularly for 20-30 mins each morning trying to vary my muscle workouts across the week.  I have also watched what I have been eating snack wise and been very aware of the food I have been eating.  Today Laura, Elizabeth and I went the swimming baths.  Something which I have been meaning to do for a while but never got around to.

What I’m saying is, I could have done any of the exercises that Wii Fit includes without it.  You could do any of them without the Wii Board, just look up the videos on the net and you’d get the moves, you just wouldn’t get the feedback on your weight distribution.

Thing is, I didn’t, and without it I wouldn’t.  Perhaps I’d go swimming once a week, but even then I’d been meaning to for such a long time.  Wii Fit is motivating me to do so.  I could get the same from a standard set of scales, but Wii Fit is making it fun (sort of) and easy.  That’s what Wii Fit is for and that’s the sort of help it will give.  If motivation is the issue the Wii Fit will probably help (it might help if there are other issues, I’m just speaking from my perspective).

So, what has the outcome been so far?  Well It’s been a week so it’s not exactly going to be staggering.  However I intend to try and write each week about what the changes have been in numerical terms, and possibly if relevant other terms.

I stress that this is not going to be just from doing Wii Fit exercise, as the impact has already taken place on my diet and other things, so this is the result of Wii Fit in a direct and indirect way.

After the first couple of days I really started to feel healthier in myself and more alert and I feel like I have more energy.  My initial figures were:

BMI: 31.05
Weight: 15st 0lb
Wii Fit Age: 33

My first target agreed with the Wii Board was to loose 7lbs (half a stone) in a month which I thought would be realistic, I didn’t want to fail at the first hurdle.  It also happens that this will take me down into the overweight category rather than the obese, which is a nice reward for my first target.  After the first week the figures are as follows:

BMI: 30.50
Weight: 14st 10lb
Wii Fit Age: 38

I will say that the Wii Fit age seems to bounce around a lot depending on the exercise in the morning test so it has been as low as 25.  I have also always measured myself at the same time prior to any breakfast or exercise with Wii Fit.  This will reduce the variation in the body during the course of the day (which the Wii Fit says can be +/-2lbs).  Stay tuned for my future progress.

R2D2 Real

Nikko Home Electronics are selling the ultimate DVD playing projector.  The remote is silly big, but still.  this is pretty cool.

Time To Leave Virgin?

Virgin Media CEO Says Net Neutrality is “A Load of Bollocks” | TorrentFreak
…turned on the BBC and their iPlayer service, telling them – and other public broadcasters like them – that if they don’t pay a premium to gain faster access to Virgin Media’s customers, their service would be put into “bus lanes”.

Well, seems like the writing is on the wall.  I am going to have to look into some serious alternatives to cable without giving BT any of my money…  I am sick of Virgin, telewest were good, but this is just rediculous.  Virgin are also planning on selling all the data I transfer online to an ad-agency too..  Well, I am going to have to find a way to vote with my feet on this one..
